Bequest Language

Sample will clauses are guidelines for your attorney when including a bequest to the Metropolitan Opera in your will or other estate-planning documents. However, you or your attorney should always contact the Met’s Planned Giving office to be certain you have the correct, most up-to-date language.

General Purpose Bequest

Specific Cash Bequest
I give and bequeath to the METROPOLITAN OPERA ASSOCIATION, INC., a New York not-for-profit corporation whose address is 30 Lincoln Center, New York, New York 10023, the sum of $_________ for its general corporate purposes.

Residuary Bequest
I give and bequeath to the METROPOLITAN OPERA ASSOCIATION, INC., a New York not-for-profit corporation whose address is 30 Lincoln Center, New York, New York 10023, _____% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate for its general corporate purposes.

Bequests for a Special Fund

I give and bequeath to the METROPOLITAN OPERA ASSOCIATION, INC., a New York not-for-profit corporation whose address is 30 Lincoln Center, New York, New York 10023 (the “Metropolitan Opera”), the sum of $______ [or _____% of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate] to be used for _________ [purpose]. If the Metropolitan Opera reasonably determines that literal compliance with this purpose is impracticable or impossible, then the Metropolitan Opera may use this bequest for its general corporate purposes, giving particular consideration to my special interest as described above.

Federal Tax Information

Your lawyer may ask you for some essential tax information about the Metropolitan Opera. The Met’s full legal name is the “Metropolitan Opera Association, Inc.," although "The Metropolitan Opera" is also registered with the State of New York and may be used in legal documents.
